Stéphane Ogier Le Passage Saint-Joseph 2020

Saint-Joseph AOP

Stéphane Ogier may be best known for his remarkable Côte-Rôties, but from next door Saint-Joseph his red is an equally mesmirising expression of Syrah. Long, poised, complex with creamy length - for northern Rhône wine fans, this is a must have.

Wine Spectator described Stéphane Ogier’s wines as “dynamic and elite”, while Wine Advocate wrote “the estate is unquestionably in the top handful of domaines in the Rhône Valley”. The family used to grow apricots, then fortuitously (for wine lovers) changed to grapes. Such was the quality that, until 1982, they sold all their grapes to top estates Guigal and Chapoutier. After two vintages in Stellenbosch, Stéphane took over from his father in the late 1990s, added extensively to the vineyards (he owns 10 hectares in Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu and Saint-Joseph) and built himself a gleaming, modern cellar. Terroir is his raison d’être. Part vinified with whole bunches, this is a silky, scented red with creamy black fruits and elegant complexity.

"Succulent, juicy; fresh, fine and sleek tannins and a flinty finish. Such depth here. Really elegant" James Suckling
