When Jörg Rupf arrived in California, he was struck by the quality of the fruit from the state’s abundant orchards. Using distilling techniques he’d learned in Germany’s Black Forest, he began making eau de vie, founding St George Spirits in 1982. Back then there was no craft distilling scene in the US and people were quick to discover his top quality spirits. In 1996, Lance Winters – scientist and brewer – pitched up at the cellar looking for a job. His CV was a bottle of homemade whiskey. Jörg signed him up and they set about expanding the range, the distillery moving to its current base in Alameda in 2004. St George Spirits is now one of the most respected distilleries in America, and this fresh, piney gin is one of the finest out there.
