Syrah excels in the northern Rhône, where it produces reds of sublime elegance, but it also loves the heat and rugged herbal strewn terrain of the Languedoc. There innovative winemaker Yannick Pons has had a crack at the special Côte Rôtie recipe – Syrah fermented with a splash of peach, blossom and spice Viognier. It works a treat at his family estate – the white grape seems to bring out the pretty fruit and herbal nuances of the Syrah. The domaine, skirted by the Canal du Midi and the Roman Via Domitia, is not far from the famous Oppidum (hilltop town) d’Ensérune, which dates back 3,000 years. All very historic but, most important of all, the area is great for wine. Enjoy this red at your next barbecue, with grilled meats or casseroles.
