Rufina is well known as the epicentre of world class Chianti. And there are few better addresses here than Selvapiana, an estate owned by Francesco Giuntini’s family since 1827. It’s a classic Tuscan estate that includes woodland, olive groves and 60 hectares of vineyards, nearly all planted to Sangiovese. Chianti’s most noble red grape thrives in the clay and limestone soils. It’s also 150-200 metres above sea level where cool night time temperatures and gentle breezes keep the grapes beautifully fresh. Low yields, traditional winemaking techniques and 12 months’ ageing in oak barrels produce a Chianti with great structure and ripeness. Supple enough to enjoy now, and well worth laying down a bottle or two to drink in a few years’ time.
