Romania may not be the first country you think of for wine yet it’s home to “some of Europe’s greatest cool-climate vineyards” (Hugh Johnson). Sebes Estate Sauvignon Blanc is a fine example, from the cool, high vineyards of Transylvania. Once part of Hungary and the Ottoman empire, Transylvania had centuries of winemaking heritage of its own before becoming part of Romania in 1918. This wine is made by Lorena Deaconu and her team, whose credentials include supplying wine to the Royal Court of Romania. Sebes Sauvignon is the latest in a line of popular wines Lorena has made for us in the UK. With hints of mango and grapefruit and lively acidity, it’s a great summer sipper, and a year round partner to suitably tasty fish and chicken dishes.
