Voluptuous, ripe red from winemaker Mark Hoddy. Why SCG? It’s a blend of Languedoc stars Syrah, Carignan and Grenache grown on schist, calcaire and granite – a perfect combination judging by the deep velvet texture and smoky, black liquorice fruit.

Syrah is the queen bee red of the northern Rhône and also excels in the herb strewn vineyards of the Languedoc. You get a similar violet scent and black fruit elegance with, of course, additional ripeness. With a wide variety of microclimates and soils in southern France, Carignan and Grenache are also stars. Winemaker Mark Hoddy loves the flavours of them all and picked out three premium cuvées, all from the 5-Star 2016 vintage. And they’re all from the premium Languedoc area (previously named Coteaux du Languedoc), grown on schist, calcaire (limestone) or granite – soils that bring out intensely flavoured grapes, certainly enough to manage two years in French oak barrels. To drink now, decant first. Or cellar. A top choice with lamb.
