Royal Tokaji 6 Puttonyos Aszú Barrel Selection 2018

Tokaji Aszu

From the finest producer of Hungary's great Tokaji, this is a very rare 6 Puttonyos sweetie from a hot, early-harvest vintage. Just 600 bottles made, it's intense, sweet, honeyed with hints of apricot, quince, blossom and rapier-like freshness.

Tokaji is the ancient wine of Hungary, once served at all the royal courts of Europe. However, it fell from grace as communism took hold last century. The great Hugh Johnson and fellow devotees bided their time, then when the curtain was lifted, were first in to invest significantly in rebuilding its reputation. They formed the Royal Tokaji Company, today’s leaders in Tokaji, cultivated the best Grand Cru sites and revived the great tradition. You may have tried their very lovely 5 Puttonyos or their Late Harvest, but their 6 Puttonyos is hardly ever made. Like Sauternes, it uses noble rot grapes - the larger the Aszú, the greater the noble rot portion. This is a masterpiece of intense sweetness and dazzling acidity. A sweet wine to savour.
