You won’t do better than this for 96 point Aussie Cabernet. It’s from 5-Star producer Robert Oatley, ready to go to the ends of the earth (hence the name Finisterre) for the finest grapes. For Cabernet, that’s Margaret River. Silky, elegant, supreme.

Bob Oatley is an Admiral’s Cup winner, British Empire Medal holder, commodities trader turned cattle rancher and, for decades, owner of the renowned Rosemount winery. These days he and his son Sandy produce wines under his eponymous label, each one designed to show off the grape and its provenance. They have impressed critic James Halliday, who awarded the winery a full 5-Stars. For their Finisterre range, they search out the finest micro region for each grape and for Cabernet in 2013 that’s Wilyabrup in Margaret River. Winemaker Larry Cherubino has done a superb job with this ageworthy red – hand harvesting, minimal intervention during the fermentation and 15 months in a mix of used and new oak barriques. Delicious now; will cellar well.
