Manzanos 2001

Rioja DOCa

What a treat – Rioja from the standout 2001 vintage. The grapes are from ancient bush vines grown particularly high in the Rioja Alavesa. Their freshness means the wine is perfect for long ageing, which you'll certainly notice in this elegant red.

The Manzanos family have been growing grapes for the last 200 years and making wine since the completion of a cellar in 1890. The latest generation, David and Victor, took it over from their father after his sudden death early this century and have been making great strides ever since. This is a superb, limited edition red from their main, flagship winery, Bodegas Manzanos. Unlike their usual Riojas, it's a blend of Tempranillo, with a large portion of Garnacha and Mazuelo, all three grapes coming from ancient bush vines grown on steep chalky slopes. This all adds up to grapes with lovely concentrated flavour. Quality was so good, the wine was aged four to six years in oak barrels. Silky, elegant, with luscious spice, it's a fine lamb red.

"So exciting to have this top vintage, 18 year old Rioja, aged 4-6 years in barrel. Mellow, complex" Beth Willard
