Ramón Roqueta Tempranillo Barrel Selection 2019

Cataluna DO

High in the hills of Catalonia, cooler temperatures promote fresher, juicier fruit than you’d find in wines from Spain’s sun-baked plains. Add a little oak and you have this Tempranillo with berry notes and gentle creamy spice from time in barrel.

Rivalling many a young Rioja, this Tempranillo Barrel Selection is a smooth, fruity red with a hint of oak from six months in cask. It’s from Pla de Bages, just north of Barcelona and in the foothills of the Pyrenees. The family can trace its history there back to 1199! Today, however, they boast a state of the art winery that sits alongside impressive 800 year old buildings built by the Roqueta family’s ancestors. Key to the wine’s fragrance and rich fruit is the altitude of the vineyards and corresponding disparity between day and night temperatures. This ensures a longer growing period for the grapes and greater aroma and flavour. Enjoy on its own, or with spicy Catalan style sausages or haricot bean casserole. A top barbecue choice too!
