Spain’s old bush vines should be regarded as national treasure – they don’t produce many bunches of grapes, but what they do grow has really concentrated flavour and richness. This smooth, old-vine Garnacha certainly bears this out. It’s named after a festival that takes place in San Roque each year, when locals dress in colours representing their tribe or club (peña). A sea of purple represents the growers, vineyard workers and winemakers, all celebrating the grape they call their own – Garnacha. Norrel Robertson MW – known locally as El Escocés Volante or ‘the Flying Scotsman’ – works at a modern cellar and made this wine for us. Enjoy this full, smooth, juicy fruit red with lamb or a bean casserole and become the newest member of Peña!
