Romania has “some of Europe’s greatest cool climate vineyards” says wine writer Hugh Johnson. From these it produces delicious, well balanced, fruity reds at a great price. Paris Street Merlot is one of the best, with abundant, ripe, plummy charm.
Tasting notes
Juicy fleshy red fruit, soft tannins and an aromatic finish
Aroma
Ripe damson and Victoria plum aromas
This silky, fruit laden Merlot is romantically named after a famous boulevard in a bohemian part of Bucharest, often referred to as Little Paris. It’s made from hand picked grapes grown in the vineyards of Muntenia, north of the Danube in Transylvania. Once part of Hungary and the Ottoman empire, the province was only incorporated into Romania in 1918, yet has centuries of winemaking heritage of its own. Today you can find wineries as advanced as any in Europe, thanks to the influx of international investment and expertise. Paris Street doesn’t pretend to rival the great Merlots of Pomerol or Napa – it is proudly Romanian and a super little wine in its own right. Smooth and full of juicy red fruits, it’s great solo or with grilled lamb.
