Château Alfa la Bernarde 2019

Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux AOC

From Bordeaux's less well known Right Bank vineyards, in Blaye, comes this appealing, fruit forward claret. Lots of ripe plum and earthy length, with good structure, the wine makes delightful drinking already, but will go the distance as well.

Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux lies across the Gironde river from the Médoc, about 45km from the city of Bordeaux. The region has been making fruit filled wines since the Roman heyday. Roman soldiers guarding the river needed sustenance! Today, much of the output from the gentle rolling vineyards remains in France. This is a pretty, Merlot dominated claret from the commune of Marsas. The château has been owned by the Frouin family for several generations. Their 9 hectares of vineyard are planted on classic clay and limestone soils over iron rich subsoil, the upshot of which is a wine of deep colour and fruit filled charm. 2019 was also a lovely ripe vintage, so the wine already makes delicious drinking. For now, it'll benefit from opening early.
