Piedmont is Italy’s gastronomic heartland, quite an achievement in a country where the cuisine is such an integral part of the national identity. Home to the slow food movement, it’s a misty, mountainous region that supplies the country’s restaurants with truffles, and fills the finest wine lists with gems like this. It was crafted by Giovanni Abrigo, son of Orlando, using high grown fruit from one of the family’s carefully tended vineyards. After a cold maceration of 25 days, the wine is transferred to 500-litre oak casks – 20% of which are new – for over a year’s ageing. This allows the wine to breathe and gain layers of spice and complexity. Add this to the red fruit and you have a very fine classic, ideal with game with truffle risotto.
