Niepoort is a top name in port, but unlike many, was not founded by the British! The house was established in 1864 by Franciscus Marius van der Niepoort from the other major port importer of the time, the Netherlands. Previously known for colheitas and tawnies, with the fifth generation, Dirk Van der Niepoort, at the helm, their vintage ports have stolen the limelight. A key move was to invest in their own vineyards – Quintas de Nápoles, do Carril and do Passadouro. Dirk is never one to follow the crowd. In 2015 he bucked the trend and declared a vintage, while in 2016, when all the other houses called a vintage, Niepoort only released the Bioma Vina Velha as one. From the steep single plot of organic Quinta da Pisco, this is very fine.
