Newton Johnson Southend Chardonnay 2019

Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley

Superb quality Chardonnay from a dynamic Cape estate near Hermanus in ocean-cooled Walker Bay. Very much a family affair, it’s quickly gained international repute. Lovely crisp apple fruit, minerality and light oak. More Chablis than Meursault.

The Newton Johnson family have established themselves among South Africa’s winemaking elite in just 20 years. This Chardonnay demonstrates a commitment to quality and a talent for making stand-out wines of both value and finesse. The winery is near the coastal town of Hermanus in Walker Bay, one of the country’s coolest regions, ideal for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir of Burgundian finesse. Grapes were sourced from 800-metre high vineyards, where an idyllic climate delivers a superb balance of ripe fruit and freshness. Though fermented and aged in barrel, the oak is subtle. “A Chardonnay worth tasting and worth much more than its price – vitality like a Premier Cru Chablis” says Hugh Johnson. Serve lightly chilled with fine seafood or chicken.

"Lovely Chardonnay with a hint of oak. Really well balanced, we have already ordered more!" 5 Star Online Review
