Described by Parker as a young producer "of the modernist school", Pier Paolo Monti is renowned for the close attention he pays to every stage of winemaking. And it shows in the superb quality of his wines. He founded his estate in Piedmont's Langhe hills in 1996 by purchasing 10 hectares of vines and building a state of the art winery. Here he grows six grape varieties, including Nebbiolo for his Barolo, Cabernet and Merlot. Over the years his wines have won many medals, which he puts down to attentive vineyard management. A superb example of 2012, a year said by Wine Spectator to produce "very good to outstanding" Nebbiolo, this modern Barolo has smoky truffle, baked plum, rose and oak notes. Let the wine breathe and serve with game.
