Malpuesto Rioja 2015

Rioja DOCa

From a winery owned by the renowned artisan winemakers Viña Izadi, this is a complex Rioja, almost claret-like in structure. Its Tempranillo grapes grow in the driest vineyard of all Alavesa, while ageing is in 100% new oak. A sleek seductive Rioja.

Malpuesto means ‘in the wrong place’ and refers to the extremely dry conditions of this 90 year old vineyard, planted at over 500 metres altitude in Rioja Alavesa. It produces extremely low yield grapes with amazing depth of colour and flavour. As wine writer Hugh Johnson says, “It is easy to make dense dark wines here, with Barossa-like in intensity.” The trick is trying to tame it. Talented winemaker Ruth Rodriguez does this by carrying out the malolactic fermentation in 100% new French oak, followed by lees stirring and regular racking from one barrel to another – all Grand Cru care for a special Rioja. From an exceptional vintage, this is a complex, long lived wine. A top match with roast red meats. Try too with monkfish Provençale.
