Madiran Millésime d'Exception 2001

Madiran AOP

Top vintage ‘jewel’ appellation red from ‘Co-op Winery of the Year’ twice over. Now with 17 years age and still going strong, this remarkable, rare red could be mistaken for a Grand Cru Classé claret. Mature, spicy plum and cassis, a good food wine.

There is enormous praise from critics for this appellation in the Pyrenean foothills that’s been producing wine since the 11th century. Hugh Johnson calls Madiran “a true jewel”, Jancis Robinson MW describes it as the most “dynamic red wine appellation”, Andrew Jefford says “No other French reds (not Cornas, nor Hermitage, nor Gigondas, nor Bandol) can truly match them.” This wine is from a cellar specialising in the quirky wines of South West France. Twice they’ve been awarded Best Co-operative of the Year. The vintage was the finest ever experienced in the appellation so no wonder this wine is ageing so gracefully. Tannat is the star here, producing the dense black fruit and structure. Decant an hour before and enjoy with red meat dishes.

"True jewel of the South West. Well able to withstand comparison with Classed Growth Bordeaux" Hugh Johnson on Madiran
