Franco Bernabei isn’t called Mr Sangiovese for nothing, as you can tell from the 99 points this superb Gran Selezione (a newly introduced top tier of Chianti Classico) has already scooped. He’s been consultant winemaker at the beautiful Fattoria Lornano for nearly 20 years and has triumphed with an enormous number of awards. The 180 hectare estate, part planted to vines, but also to olives and cereal, has been owned by the Taddei family since 1904. And no expense is spared in making this from one of the region’s finest properties. It lies in the hills of Castellina, close to Siena, and produces wines of world renown. Aged in new French oak for three years, this is a collector’s wine. Let it breathe and serve with fine game or beef dishes.

"Fabulous 99 point Gran Selezione – the new top tier for Chianti – and named 'Best red of Italy'" Leonardo Bassano
