Long Live The King Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

South Eastern Australia

This inky dark, cassis rich red is from talented winemaker Sam Trimboli. We’ve been working with him for many years. Usually he sources the Cabernet from King Valley, but in 2017 he’s looked more widely to make this dense, fruit laden red.

Long Live the King is a dense, supple red – a collaboration between Bill Calabria’s West End winery and winemaker Sam Trimboli. The wine was originally a tribute to Victoria’s magnificent King Valley that in 1995 was under threat from the dreaded phylloxera beetle. Determined winemakers dug in and managed to fight the pest off. In 2017 Sam Trimboli decided to broaden his source of grapes for ‘The King’, complementing the leaner King Valley fruit with the ripe warmth of grapes from New South Wales. The result is a luscious wine, rich with sweet dark berries, blackcurrant and plum, with a classic hint of mint, plus good grip and length. For now let the wine breathe for half an hour before serving with aged steak or mature farmhouse Cheddar.
