One thing the Langudoc does extremely well is Grenache, Carignan and Syrah blends from old, low yielding vines. The best examples are made by extraordinary winemakers with passion and talent. Jeff Carrel stands out. He calls himself eclectic but when you spend a little time with him tasting and listening, you are left with one overriding impression. The man makes fabulous wine. Les Darons means ‘the fathers’, a veiled reference to the old, free standing bush vines that have made a pivotal contribution to this wine’s intensity and complexity. Open a bottle when you have time to appreciate it. Its rich, smooth, bramble, tar, wild herb and mineral character deserves quiet contemplation. And something hearty of the red meat or veggie kind.
