With rolling hills and vineyards as high as 500 metres, Beaujolais is one of the prettiest of France’s wine regions. It lies on the southern tip of Burgundy, but king grape here is Gamay, not Pinot Noir. Its supple, fruity wines are well worth seeking out, especially from the dream vintage of 2018. This charming wine is from Les Vignerons des Pierres Dorées, a cellar which lies in the prized subregion of golden stones (Pierres Dorées), from which it takes its name. On the well drained, stony soils of the area, Gamay achieves juicy ripeness while maintaining its natural, lively acidity. Bright berry fruit and incomparable quaffability – this wine is great served cool on its own, with charcuterie or with rustic pâté and crusty bread.
