James E. Pepper Rye Whiskey (70cl) NV

Undefined US Region

From a distillery first founded in 1776, this is a peppery, fruit-filled rye whiskey, with many Golds and top scores under its proverbial belt. A nearly-all rye mash sets the scene – a rich, mellow whiskey, great as a cocktail base, even better neat.

Founder of the distillery, Elijah Pepper, was a plucky fellow, starting his business off during America's War of Independence. Once it had ended, he started another distillery, this time in Kentucky. It became the largest distillery in America. Two generations continued Elijah's entrepreneurial work, first his son Oscar, then grandson James. When they hit financial hardship, James had to sell up, but kept back 300 casks, which were sold during Prohibition times for 'medicinal purposes'. In 2008, the brand was revived by new owner Amir Peay, who presents us today with the 1776 Rye Whiskey, a mash of 95% rye and 5% malted barley, and bottled at 46% ABV. Great as the base for an Old Fashioned or Manhattan, but even better served neat over ice.

"Aged 3-4 years in cask, this mocha, dark berry fruit whiskey is one to savour slowly" Samuel Fishlock
