Heredad Chavarri Albariño 2018

Rias Baixas DO

Albariño is the queen bee of Spain’s white grapes. Our friend in Rioja, Ruth Chavarri, has recently opened a cellar in its favourite region, Rias Baixas, in NW Spain, and produced this elegant, brilliantly mineral fresh, lemon, lime and stony white.

Spain's white wines have really come of age in the last decade. Out went oxidation and in came mesmerising crisp and vivacious, stony lemon flavours. In cool, wet Galicia in northwest Spain, the winemaking DO of Rías Baixas is home to the spellbinding Albariño grape. Such is its popularity these days that growers can barely keep up with demand. Ruth Chavarri’s Albariño comes from one of the grape’s much preferred sites, close to the Atlantic coast, so it’s a really authentic example. It’s a complex compilation of nectarine and peach flavours with a fine minerality courtesy of the rich alluvial soils and a freshness thanks to cool sea breezes. All in all a Spanish fandango of delight sipped on its own or with noodles or catch of the day.
