Hambledon can boast of being the first to produce English wines commercially. That was in the 1950s after the estate’s owner Major-General Sir Guy Salisbury-Jones was inspired to plant a vineyard in a spare field. A Francophile and a wine lover, he did a good job, and Hambledon’s wines won Golds and were served at many important state occasions. Fast forward to the early 2000s, and a new start with a new owner, Ian Kellett. Ian planted Champagne grapes Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, invested in a new winery and brought in one of Champagne’s best chefs de cave as winemaker, Hervé Jestin. Today their wines gain many awards. This fine pink is Chardonnay with Pinot Noir, aged long on its lees in bottle. A superb celebratory drink.
