Pagos de Tahola is an outstanding modern Rioja from a century old family estate. The wine’s exuberant, bright fruit comes down to mature vines grown in some of Rioja’s highest vineyards, and its intensity is thanks to the excellent quality of the vintage. The first vines were planted at this estate in 1882 while the winery was rebuilt in 1968. Two generations of the Chavarri family are now in charge – father Francisco and daughter Ruth – while Miguel Lopez Nunez is winemaker. Intended to be enjoyed in its youth, this oak aged Tempranillo is very much the style the locals prefer, with its simple red berry flavours and subtle hints of vanilla and cloves from oak ageing. Be authentic and serve with tapas, grilled lamb or rabbit stew.
