If you love Argentinian wine, here’s something a bit different. Syrah from the San Juan region. It’s very much in a classic Northern Rhône style, full of pretty red fruits and a hearty dose of dark plum, pepper and liquorice.
"Lovely balanced red, more in the bright, elegant and refreshing style of Syrah. Very tasty"
Beth Willard Buyer for Argentina
There’s not much Syrah in Argentina but what is there is top notch. Winemakers there like to blend it with Malbec in a gutsy challenge to ever-popular Aussie Cabernet Shiraz. We think it’s great on its own, full of rich black pepper and liquorice flavours. Bodegas La Guarda is a family owned winery in San Juan, a region rapidly becoming famous for Syrah. It’s no surprise really – experts have always said ‘Syrah likes a view’ because of its tendency to grow at the top of a hill. And these vineyards lie just a few kilometres from the mighty snow capped Andes. El Guardado Syrah grows at 750 metres, where cool breezes and fresh snowmelt nourish the vines to yield the complex peppery flavours that go so well with roast lamb and rich casseroles.
