Jacky Blot is a star Loire winemaker. A broker by trade, he fell in love with the wines of Montlouis and set out to show that its whites could be finer than even its neighbour, Vouvray. Starting with 8 hectares in 1989, he now has 25, every vine painstakingly cared for organically. In 2010, he bought Clos de Mosny, the Loire's largest monopole. Its soils are some of the best – chalk subsoil topped with clay and silex. Ploughing between rows to encourage vines to dig deeper, hard pruning and deleafing are just some of his methods. In the cellar he’s equally meticulous. Only 12% of the monopole grapes make it into the final blend, all oak fermented (20% new), completely dry, a slow process, taking up to a year. A remarkably fine Chenin.
