The southern Rhône’s Vacqueyras was proud to be awarded full appellation controlée status in 1990, straight after Gigondas next door. Rightly so judging by the richness and depth of its luscious wines. Indeed, Vacqueyras has been making rich reds for centuries and today’s top examples strike the perfect balance between powerful, ripe fruit and structure. And that’s exactly what you have here. Domaine de Vervine is a small estate at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail. Its vineyards are planted amidst sun dried garrigue, which lends herbal complexity to this juicy Rhône red. This wine is ready to enjoy now but given time the ripe, red fruit will develop notes of liquorice, pepper and spice. Locals would serve with game or wild boar stew.
