Decanter has named Domaine Zind Humbrecht as one of France’s Top 10 wineries: “Does winemaking genius exist? If it does then Olivier Humbrecht MW must be in the frame.” Wine Advocate called the wines “absolutely impressive in their depth”. The family there have been growers since 1620 and started making their own wines in 1947. They now have 41 hectares, all tended biodynamically – by 24 full-time staff – to express as perfectly as possible the grape and its limestone ‘calcaire’ terroir. “Pinot Gris is a grape which has strong ties to the earth. It needs strong terroir and low yields to assert its character,” says Olivier Humbrecht. The rich, creamy fruit in this wine shows how he got the balance just right. Perfect with sea bass or crab.
