Burgundy’s Meursault might look like sleepy backwater, but its wines have an enormous reputation. Domaine Matrot is a top class estate, founded in 1909 by Joseph Matrot, passed to his son Thierry in 1976, who handed over to his daughters in 2015. Their splendid Meursault is made from the rich fruit of Chardonnay vines on average 40 years old, hence the lovely intensity, while fermentation (using indigenous yeasts) in French barrels lends layers of complexity. The winemaking is meticulous – 11 months lees ageing brings creamy flavour and weight, all underscored by classic minerality (‘the cut’). The final result is a bone-dry wine of delicious freshness with creamy roundness, ripe peach and smoky honey notes. Lovely now, but will age well.
