Neighbour to better-known Savigny, Chorey-lès-Beaune was awarded its own appellation status in 1970. Way overdue, as its dedicated growers convincingly proved. This seductively ripe, yet delicate Chorey is from the Girard family, whose estate, based in Savigny, dates back 12 generations. Over the last 15 years, Jean-Jacques and his wife Agnès have increased their vineyards to cover top sites from Corton in the north, to Volnay in the south. They are now joined by their sons Vincent and François and make an impressive range of small-batch wines from across Burgundy. Traditionally made, with 9 months in oak foudres, this Chorey dances across your tongue with its fragrant red berry fruit. For drinking now, open early. It'll cellar well too.
