Superb white Burgundy from a family domaine that excels with fine Chablis. The Tonnerre vineyards lie just outside the hallowed region and were forgotten until rediscovered by the Dampts. This bright citrusy white has all the Chablis credentials.
Founded by Bernard Dampt in 1980, this fine estate is now run by his sons Eric, Emmanuel and Hervé. They have won numerous top medals and also ‘Chablis Young Winemaker of the Year’. Their wines always have a lovely purity of fruit and superb intensity, and their Tonnerre white and Petit Chablis are particularly accessible early on and very good value. This Tonnerre is named after a colourful local character, Charles Geneviève Louis d’Eon de Beaumont, aka the Chevalier d’Eon, who in the 18th century became famous for cross dressing – as a diplomat, while conducting secret negotiations with the Russian Empress Elizabeth, and as a matter of personal preference. Serve gently chilled with sauced white meats, seafood or savoury filled gougères.
