Leading the way for the ‘modernist’ school of winemaking in the Rhône’s Cornas region are the Courbis brothers – arguably the region’s most notable winemakers. They own some of the most prestigious sites in Cornas – and their La Sabarotte vineyard is considered one of the very best. Especially so in 2016, which boasts a rafter of 94+ point scores. The Courbis family can trace their winemaking roots in the Rhône to 400 years ago. Over that time, they’ve cemented themselves as one of the finest winemaking families in the region Their La Sabarotte vineyard grows extremely old, low-yielding vines that deliver tiny black gems of ultra-ripe Syrah ”Top Cornas … aged in 80% new oak until being bottled in June 2018. Yes, it’s an unabashedly modern style, full-bodied, creamy in texture and offering pristine purple raspberry fruit, but man is this good. It will be hard to keep from drinking this in its first 5-10 years.” 94-96 points, Wine Advocate. Dramatic aromas of saturated black fruits from the glass. Full-bodied, almost chewy blackberry on the palate, with fine-grained tannins and wonderful mineral freshness. Can be opened now, but will benefit from 5-10 years in bottle.
