Unlike pricy Sauternes, the luscious sweet wines of the Loire are well priced gems. That’s particularly true of the Coteaux du Layon, where Chenin Blanc is supreme. This 2001 is from fourth generation Domaine Cady, an estate founded in 1927. It lies in Saint Aubin, close to the river Layon. Painstakingly crafted from late harvested, botrytis affected grapes (the same noble rot as in Sauternes) these produce a tiny amount of honeyed nectar. The noble rot punctures the skin, so berries lose moisture, and flavour becomes super intense. It takes many visits to the vineyard at harvest to pick each berry at its optimum moment. Lees ageing adds lush creaminess. Serve with fruit tart with crème pâtisserie, tarte tatin or with the Christmas pudding.
