Brindisi DOC lies in the heel of Italy’s boot – quite a low lying area, centred around the deep water port of the same name. High temperatures and poor soils seem to suit the Negroamaro grape, the dominant variety in this area, producing deep and intensely flavoured reds. Yet the wines are beautifully balanced and elegant too. That’s especially true of this gorgeous, well priced Riserva from highly experienced winemaker Marco Flacco. He’s used Negroamaro with a dash of softer Malvasia Nera – a classic blend of the area – aged for two years in barrel and the rest in bottle. Intense cherry with layers of chocolatey spice and a refreshing bite that makes it excellent with food. Decant and serve with charcuterie, pork or a veggie casserole.
