The Clonakilla Shiraz label is an immediate giveaway to the Irish influence behind the estate. It means 'meadow of the church' and is the name of Dr Kirk's grandfather's farm in County Clare. Dr Kirk planted his vineyard in 1971, curious as to why no one had tried before. His scientific research had shown the region was ideal for certain varieties. One of his six sons, Tim, took over in 1997 and after a visit to Côte Rôtie, to Guigal, he was inspired to try out Viognier too. The family only has 12 hectares of vines and sells out every year. 'Hilltops' is the baby brother of the top wine, and uses grapes from four nearby growers. Fermented in open top vats and aged for 11 months in oak, the wine is earlier drinking with finesse and elegance.
