See the words Syrah or Shiraz on a label and you immediately think of a juicy red with full-on flavour. After all it’s the grape behind the Rhône Valley’s fine reds and it is key in the Barossa. But this one is from Spain, from steep vineyards 600 metres high and 30 miles inland from Valencia. While Spanish holidaymakers flock to Valencia’s beaches, the sunny arid hills further inland are a haven of calm where this varietal ripens to perfection, with cool nights lending balance and finesse. Winemaker Maria Angeles Camara’s deft touch ensures this ripe, intense red is gorgeously smooth but not overpowering. Previous vintages have secured top international medals and, from low yield 2017, this should be even finer. Perfect with spicy chorizo.
