Toro has been growing grapes for centuries but only recently has this region shown its strength for top end wines. It lies in the heart of Castilla y León, northwest of Madrid. Previously, wines from here were extremely alcoholic – 16% vol was not uncommon – but with an influx of younger, well trained winemakers and new technology, things have changed dramatically. Made from Tinto del Toro (aka Tempranillo), the best reds are fruitier, with more finesse and complexity. Unoaked and using old-vine fruit for intensity, Joya del Río (meaning Jewel of the Duero) reflects the great reputation the Marqués de Olivara winery has enjoyed since its foundation in 1970. Winemaker Mireia Altimira recommends this red with grilled meats or strong cheeses.
