Château du Retout 2015

Haut-Medoc AOC Cru Bourgeois

We’ve always sought out exceptional quality wines from ‘under the radar’ estates, and Château du Retout caught our attention in the 2015 vintage. This fine claret has classic Haut-Médoc richness and sumptuous ripeness, yet comes at a sensible price.

Wine Spectator had ample praise for the 2015 vintage from Château du Retout, describing its “tangy red currant and damson fruit, lingering through the finish. Very solid, with good typicity.” They awarded it an impressive 89–92 points. And Wine Advocate also enjoyed it. The property has a fascinating history. Classified cru bourgeois in 1855, the vineyards were abandoned following the phylloxera epidemic and the impact of the First World War. It was bought by the Kopp family in the 1950s and through their efforts regained cru bourgeois status in 2009. Having been aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, a quarter of which were new, this Cabernet-rich wine has a natural affinity with roast red meats, especially lamb. Decant before serving.

"Plenty of ripe black cherry and cassis fruit on the nose, in a strange way more Right Bank in style" Neal Martin
