Jancis Robinson MW called 2016, “the best Bordeaux vintage I will probably ever taste”. High praise indeed and no wonder, then, this appealing Bordeaux has claimed five Gold medals and is ageing so gracefully. A great-value, Merlot-rich claret.

So what's so special about Bordeaux's 2016 vintage? The wines have an amazing combination of pure, ripe fruit, freshness and silk-like tannins that give them real appeal. They were charming in their youth, but with extra maturity are now tasting even better. Château La Platus is a Merlot-rich red from winemaker Mathieu Lentignac. Matured in barrel followed by several years in bottle, it’s drinking superbly with bright red fruit, hints of cloves and creamy oak. Very fresh and elegant, it’s easy to see why it’s impressed so many judges at international wine competitions. There's still no rush with this wine – it has a few years in it yet. However, it's tasting so delicious, we suggest opening a bottle straightaway! A classic with steak.
