Parker was full of praise for this vintage: “2010 has produced another year of compelling Bordeaux that will go down as a prodigious vintage alongside 2009.” This is a delicious, delicate Saint Emilion Grand Cru from a vineyard now owned by Angelús.

When problems with an inheritance forced Paul Carrille and his family to sell the vineyard of Château Cardinal Villemaurine, they decided to sell the contents of their wine vaults too, bottles ageing underground in the limestone cellars. Surrounded by famous names like Pavie, Clos Fourtet and Ausone, the vineyard was snapped up in a flash. And when it came to the cellar’s contents, Paul knew our Buyer Jean-Marc Sauboua would be keen to look. Paul’s stocks dated back to 1948 but JMS was particularly keen to taste that “prodigious vintage” the 2010. He wasn’t disappointed. Fruity, with a solid tannic structure, it’s drinking well now, or can be cellared longer. Handily enough, magnums are the ideal vessel for ageing claret. Serve with roasts.
