A superb textbook Saint Estèphe, described by Vinous as "one of the must buys of 2017". That's because it's always so well priced and pure class. Critic Jeb Dunnock wrote, "gorgeous purity of fruit. Classic Bordeaux lovers will dig this"! A star buy.

This fine estate was the property of the Gasqueton family, owners too of the more famous and expensive cru classé Calon–Ségur. Both châteaux were bought by French insurance company Suravenir after the owner’s death in 2012. It is a 41 hectare property, excellently situated to the south of Calon-Ségur and also near famous Châteaux Montrose and Cos d’Estournel. This is a fine, well made claret with a substantial portion of Merlot to soften and fill out the flavours. There’s lovely depth to it, too, thanks to the age of the vines, while 18 months in oak barriques, an impressive 40% of which were new, lends a serious layer of subtle vanilla spice. With classic Saint Estèphe firmness, it’s best decanted early. Then serve with roast lamb or duck.
