Decanter proclaims “Good Lalande de Pomerol is a Bordeaux bargain!”, rivalling some of the wines from properties in Pomerol next door. We were delighted to secure this château’s fabulously mature 2008 vintage made by Cheval Blanc's former winemaker.

Pomerol is home to the most superb of Bordeaux’s Merlot-based reds, but they come with a stratospheric price tag. Just across the little River Barbanne, however, lies the satellite Lalande de Pomerol appellation. “Many of today’s Lalandes are of an equal quality to a middle-ranking Pomerol. They have the same opulent richness” says Roger Voss in Decanter. The light sand and gravel soils yield grapes of the same high standard – mostly Merlot and Cabernet Franc – with similar luscious red fruit and plum notes. Lying just 1km north of Pétrus, Canon Chaigneau is one of the region's best and its winemaker today is Thierry Garnaud, formerly at Cheval Blanc. Revel in the mellow, silky, delicate fruit and spice of this fine 2008. Ideal with game.
