The 2006 vintage had a hard act to follow after the very fine 2005. It wasn't an easy year either, particularly on the Right Bank. Still Decanter had praise for Haut Médoc wines, "a series of reliable wines with an attractive freshness and good aging potential," amply illustrated by this 14-year old, mellow claret. Château Bertrand Braneyre is but a 10-minute drive from the iconic Rothschild estates of Châteaux Mouton and Lafite in Pauillac. Their wines command crazy prices, but this elegant claret gives you fine drinking at a seriously modest price. Made from the concentrated fruit of 40-year-old vines (mostly Cabernet Sauvignon), this matured into delicate red fruit and cedar spice complexity. If there's sediment, let the bottle stand.
