This former 18th century hunting lodge and ornate château lies on the edge of Saint-Julien. Château Belgrave’s wines have a similar richness and finesse to those from the great Bordeaux commune and offer good value. The estate was adopted by the Dourthe family in 1979 and it has been transformed. Refurbishments of the cellar and the property’s 55 hectares of vineyard were the start. Frost affected the 2017 harvest, but meticulous grape selection resulted in the lesser fruit being removed. Cabernet based and aged in fine French oak barriques for 14 months, it has a lovely richness and subtle power, with complexity matching the concentrated fruit. Compelling enough for the wine to be awarded 91 points by Decanter. Serve with red meat roasts.
