The wines from Bordeaux’s 2004 vintage have nearly all disappeared into private cellars. But not this silky, well aged beauty from a Saint Emilion Grand Cru estate. Clos Villemaurine is owned by Jean-François Carille, but only the buildings. The family had to sell the vineyards in 2014. There was quite a clamour as they are situated on classic limestone clay soils and surrounded by famous names like Pavie, Clos Fourtet and Ausone. £250 a bottle Château Angélus offered the winning bid and is where you'll find the grapes from 2015 onwards! Dug deep into the limestone soils, the Carille cellars are perfect for ageing clarets at a constant temperature. That’s why this mellow, delicately nuanced red is in such great shape. Game would be ideal.

"Claret now 14 years old – gentle redcurrant, mellow, hint of spice and oak" Jean-Marc Sauboua
