For a velvety, rounded, ripe style of claret, it'll be hard to beat Château Pericou. Especially in the 2018 vintage – a warm year, that produced excellent quality grapes. Deep plum and creamy cassis over a firm stucture, this is an appealing claret.

Château Pericou is an attractive estate on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, just on the fringes of the Côtes de Blaye. It was owned by the late Jean-Yves Courpon, who at his death, bequeathed it to the local Cavignac municipality. With pride, they have upheld his legacy and continued to develop the property. It boasts gravel, clay and limestone soils that provide excellent drainage and promote lovely flavour intensity in the grapes. Made largely from Merlot, with Cabernet Sauvignon, all from vineyards now 25 years old, this claret was traditionally made to show real depth of fruit and firm tannins. Gently rounded with appealing complexity, this Bordeaux will make a fine partner to roast meats, game pie perhaps or vegetable stew with dumplings.
