While Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé’s winemakers compete for the limelight, producers in Vouvray are quietly crafting one of the Loire’s most classic whites. Sweethearts Didier and Catherine Champalou bought half a hectare of vines in 1983 – harvesting their first precious crop three years later. Their Vouvray Le Portail is made from the tiny parcel of vines situated between the gate to the Champalous' property and their winery, on top of the caves that house the wines. Grapes are hand picked and pressed immediately. The juice is then vinified in wooden barrels. After fermentation, the wine sits on its lees for 12 months in barrel before bottling. Coming from a legendary vintage, enjoy this superior, mineral fresh Vouvray with grilled fish.
